Gore was about to enter the lift to visit Level 4 and see how Owain was settling in, when from behind somebody called him. He turned and looked at the operative approaching him.

‘What is it?’

‘Sir, you asked to be informed if Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart left Edinburgh.’

‘Ah. Do we know where he’s heading?’

‘Yes, sir. We intercepted a call between Lieutenant Bishop and RAF Kirknewton. They’re taking a chopper to Fugglestone.’

Gore smiled at this. Good, while they were busy trying to work out what to do next, he could focus on opening the Gateway. He dismissed the operative and stepped into the lift, inserting his key into the secret slot. The door closed, and as the lift began its descent he considered Owain Vine.

The so-called nephew of Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart. If anybody had a claim to that title it was Simon, not Owain. They may have been from alternative worlds, but Simon and Alistair both carried the same Lethbridge-Stewart blood in their veins.

Owain, on the other hand, carried within him something much more interesting. Gore was looking forward to having a conversation with the young man before he was connected up to the Gateway. He wondered how Owain would cope when confronted with a man who was, in essence, his previous self?
